EDUCATOR ALERT:  Public Act 097-0607
Changes to Teaching Certificate Registration

The staff at the Grundy/Kendall County ROE is urging all teachers to be sure that their Illinois teaching certificates are currently registered.

On August 26, 2011 Public Act 097-0607 was signed into law by Governor Quinn. This new law significantly changes when a teaching certificate is to be considered "lapsed".  The new law requires a certificate to be lapsed six months after the last registration year. Thus, a certificate that had a registration due date of June 30, 2012 is given a grace period of six months (until December 31, 2012) for the educator to renew and register the certificate. An educator may not teach in any position requiring certification under a lapsed certificate. To reinstate the lapsed certificate, the educator is now required to either complete nine semester college credit hours in an area of endorsement on their certificate or pay a $500.00 penalty fee in lieu of the coursework.

The Grundy/Kendall ROE urges all educators to know the status of their certificate(s) including when they require renewal or registration. Educators may verify their credentials through the Illinois State Board of Education's Educator Certification System at www.isbe.net/ecs or by contacting their serving Regional Office of Education (ROE). Consider Taking your GED test in 2012 or 2013...

All indications are that the effective January 1, 2014, the GED test will only be available in a computer based test.   The cost, we are hearing, will rise from $50 to $130.  If you or someone you know is considering taking the GED, consider taking it within the next year.  Warning about this transition:  if you have passed parts of the GED test but have failed other parts as of December 31, 2013, you will have to re-take and pass all parts of the GED test when it becomes computer-based; therefore it would be wise to take the GED test as early as possible in 2013 so that if you fail part of the GED test, you can re-take the parts that you failed before the end of 2013.
